Welcome to Hand og Oske, a soap exhibition in the Reksten Villa, presented by Emne Studio in collaboration with Fure Studio. Eleven artists here challenge the normative, historical, and functional understanding of soap, each in their own way.

The exhibition comprises ten works and a diversity of approaches to soap as a conceptual and malleable material. From poetic studies of bars of soap that diminish and bear witness to the passage of time, via knowledge of herbs and craft traditions, to functional sculptures intended for taste and touch.

In Roman mythology, the word *sapo* (soap) is linked to the mythical Mount Sapo, where sacrificial animals were burned. Rainwater mixed ash and fat, which ran down into the river and made clothes cleaner. Culturally, soap has become a symbol of the fight against bacteria. At the same time, the function of soap extends from basic sanitary needs to well-being, and can form the basis for vanity, or be drawn in directions associated with sin and shame. For *Hand og Oske*, six new works have been produced, each weighing approximately two kilograms, made from recast or carved honey soap.

The exhibition takes place in the historic rooms of the Reksten Villa, a representative early-20th-century villa built of masonry and wood, with exposed wooden floors and rich mouldings. The villa is located in Paradis in Bergen and normally houses Fure Studio.

Velkomen til Hand og Oske, ei såpeutstilling i Reksten-villaen, presentert av Emne Studio i samarbeid med Fure Studio. Elleve kunstnarar utfordrar her den normative, historiske og funksjonelle forståinga av såpe, kvar på sitt vis.

Utstillinga rommar ti verk og eit mangfald av tilnærmingar til såpe som konseptuelt og formbart materiale. Frå poetiske studiar av såpestykke som minkar og vitnar om tid som går, via kunnskap om urter og handverkstradisjonar, til funksjonelle skulpturar for smak og berøring.

I romersk mytologi vert ordet sapo (såpe) knytt til det mytiske Mount Sapo, der offerdyr vart brende. Regnvatn blanda oske og feitt, som rann ned i elva og gjorde kleda reinare. Kulturelt har såpa vorte eit symbol på kampen mot bakteriar. Samstundes strekkjer funksjonen til såpa seg frå grunnleggande sanitære behov til velvære, og kan leggje grunnlag for forfengelegheit, eller trekkjast i retningar assosierte med synd og skam. For Hand og Oske er det produsert seks nye verk, kvar på omlag to kilo, av omstøypt eller utskjert honningsåpe.

Utstillinga tek plass i dei historiske romma i Reksten-villaen, ein representativ villa frå tidleg 1900-tal, bygd i mur og tre, med synlege tregolv og rikt listverk. Villaen ligg på Paradis i Bergen og huser til vanleg Fure Studio.
